Livingston Texas

March 23

My gps gadget didn't have the address of the place that I went to get the ramp, it put me on a dead end road! There was new construction and some roads were closed.  I had to back the trailer a couple 100 yards then try to get it turned around in an equipment yard.  It took awhile but I did it, yea!  It gave me the courage to back into my site at the campground.

This place is all rolling hills and pine trees.  There is a lake nearby which I will check out later.  I might even send a picture or two.

Well I made it to Livingston. No problems other than rain and traffic and the route I took to avoid metro Houston.  I got in about 4:30 and was set up in about 45 minutes. I even signed up for the $5 fajita dinner on Thursday.

March 24

The dinner was good and priced right $5.  The campground gives me a free week if I pay for 3 weeks in advance so, I did!  It nets out at $9 a day, not bad.

It turned real cold the last couple of days, there was frost on the car this morning and expect a high of 60 today then it should warm up again.  Quite a change from the near 80's that were normal for the first couple of weeks here.

There is a caravan to a local Rodeo tomorrow that is on my list.  I was out around the trailer and my next door neighbor, you can see the front of the motor home in the middle picture, came over to say hello.  She is about 80 and lives alone, full time in the RV.  She lost her son in Viet Nam.  He was a medic with the Marines!  Small world.  I told her about the Run For The Wall and she was impressed that so many still cared.

The park has sold some lots for full time living.  Most are modest sized with a mobile home.  Some have made room for their RV:

How big a part of their lives are built around RV?  The home on the left is the part at the end with the window!

Below are the "Clubhouse", on the left and the "Activity Center".

 April 9

I have neighbors!  April 9, the new shade for the back window showed up Friday.  I even installed it the same day!

I can now raise them and see out the back:

I found Livingston's claim to fame:

April 17

I found a retired Marine with a generator for sale and after telling each other lies we settled on a price.  I can now stop anywhere and run the air and watch TV until the generator runs out of gas.

April 19

I remembered how to hook the trailer to the truck and disconnect all of the hookups, water, electric and sewer, and took off for Weatherford Texas this morning.  I got on the road about 8:00 am and arrived at 1:30 pm.  No excitement on the road, everyone behaved it was still 280 miles.  Then about an hour to get the trailer level and everything hooked back up.

I thought I'd still be able to get the network TV stations from Houston on the satellite, but can't.  I sent the paperwork in to get the feeds from NY and LA.  I'll be able to watch Survivor twice!

Driving across Texas I have to watch the bridge heights, the trailer is a little over 12 feet high.  Going down the road I noticed a bridge with a 14 foot clearance and a few hundred yards further a second bridge with a 16 foot clearance.  There was no place between the bridges for anyone to enter the road or turn around.  So, why have a sign on the second bridge?  If you make it under the first one you can't hit the second one.  The sign painter must be some politicians relative!

April 28

It has been a slow week but I did get some stuff done.  I went out trying to find a way to put some flags on the truck for "the run".  The third stop was at a truck accessories shop where I found a compassionate vet.  He said, "we'll fix you up for $50 or $60".  It was the best deal yet they are fabricating a mount so I ordered the flags, US and MIA/POW.

The satellite now has both the east coast and west coast network feeds so I get 6 hours of primetime every night.

I picked up some gas cans for the generator and fired it up, it works and I moved the hitch in the truck down two inches.  It was raised for the old tool box and doesn't have to be that high now.

The Run web site has the detailed schedule posted so take a look at the Southern Route if you are interested.

May 6

I went to Crawford Texas for a Minuteman Rally today.  The caravan was scheduled to go through Weatherford on their way to Crawford.  They were leaving Abilene at 7:00 and it is 120+ miles so I was at the truck stop at 8:45 ready to join in.  I waited until 10:00 and never saw them!  If I was going to make the Rally at 1:00 it was time to go, so off I went!  I arrived in Crawford about 12:30 and there they were assembling for the ride to the Rally so I joined in.

It was only about 1 mile to the rally and everyone took refuge in the tent as a thundershower was letting go.  One man asked me "how long will this last?"  I told him "October!"

Minutemen

I talked to a Harley rider who is running for the senate and a candidate for mayor that said, "If you don't own a gun, vote for someone else!".   The signs ran from "What part of Illegal don't you understand", to "Keep the $100 and use it for the fence!".  I'd guess that there were 400-500 mad people there.

Crawford is a real small town and I took the back roads home.  It's real pretty country, green meadows, streams, ponds and rolling hills.  Bob would appreciate the "Drive Through, Beer Barn" in one town.

Two weeks to go.

That's it!
