Sturgis Bike Week

Aug 12:  It's quiet!  The continuous rumble of the Harleys has dropped of to the occasional biker going down the hiway.  The migration has reversed course and it is quiet.  This morning as I went to Wall for breakfast there wasn't a single bike in Wasta, there had been a few each day until now.  All of the bikers on the road were heading away from Sturgis along with the vendor semi trucks.  The party is over for another year.  T-Shirts that were selling for $10 each were marked 5 for $11.  The bikers who stopped in Wall for food and fuel all looked a little dazed.  I think this picture says it best.

Aug 10:  Ralph left for the trip home yesterday.  I had a headache on Wednesday and stayed in and tried to stay cool yesterday.  The more I thought about Sturgis the less real it seemed so I went back this morning.  It is real!  As the temperature approached 100, I packed it in and went back to Wasta.  Three different bikers noticed the Patriot Guard signs on the truck and gave me a thumbs up as they went by.  They are friends that I haven't met yet.

Aug 7:  Ralph Hiller joined up with me last night after stopping in Rapid City for a new rear tire.  We went to Sturgis to take in the show.  If you haven't been here you cannot imagine what it is like.  Everywhere you go there is the background rumble of the Harleys.  Bikes everywhere.  I heard that the population of South Dakota doubles during bike week and all of those people are within about 50 miles of Sturgis!  Tent space in some ones yard goes for $30 a night if you get there early enough to find one!  How about $5,000 for two RV spaces for a week!

On the way back to the campground we came up on an accident where a biker was down in the freeway median.  People had already stopped but I pulled over, put the flashing lights on and called 911.  The operator wasn't yet aware of this accident so our report may have been the first.

Here are some of the sights of Sturgis:
